This should be considered a high priority recall. A burn could result from the hot tailpipe extension. Please contact your Mini dealer. They will check to see if your specific vehicle is affected and advise you on what to do next. Always have your vehicle identification number (VIN) handy when you call.
The tailpipe extension protrudes slightly past the rear bumper. Inadvertent contact with the tailpipe extension could occur. If the extension were hot, a burn could result. Dealers will replace the tailpipe extension with a shorter one to correct this issue. This recall is expected to begin during January of 2009.
Here’s what’s at issue, according to the NHTSA notice. Some vehicles may have had a stainless steel exhaust tip installed at the port of import upon arrival. Such exhaust tips may extend beyond the length of the tailpipes originally installed at the factory. If a person inadvertently comes into contact with the tailpipe extension, and the tailpipe is hot at the time of the contact, a burn could occur.
